The current film and television cameras, besides the widely known V-mount batteries, also feature B-mount batteries. This is a new battery standard introduced by the German manufacturer Bebob during NAB 2019. So, what exactly are B-mount batteries?
What is B mount battery?
This is a type of rechargeable battery designed for professional cameras, capable of supporting a voltage of 24V, which aligns with ARRI’s 24V open standard battery system. ARRI has designated the B-mount as the new battery standard, with these batteries typically designed with a specific mounting interface called “B-mount” to securely attach to the camera.
The B-Mount battery interface is an open industry standard recognized by ARRI and the broader industry. B-mount adapters not only provide high-capacity 24V power but also support 12V, offering higher efficiency and improved data communication compared to previous systems.
What are the differences between B-mount batteries and V-mount batteries?
Firstly, the locking mechanism differs. The V-lock battery has a “V” shaped lock that requires vertical installation, while the B-mount battery has a very robust horizontal locking mechanism. This design ensures that even when lifting or moving equipment, there is no risk of the battery popping out of the bracket due to loose locking, reducing the risk of accidental drops and enhancing the stability and safety of the equipment.
Secondly, another significant difference lies in the voltage output of the batteries. The voltage output of V-mount batteries generally hovers around 12V, for example, the BLADE 99S has a voltage of 14.4V. In contrast, B-mount batteries are designed with voltages of 24V and above, such as the B-300WM with a voltage design of 28.8V. This allows them to power larger-demand equipment, meeting the growing power requirements for shooting.
Thirdly, there is a noticeable difference in weight. Due to their lower voltage, V-lock batteries are typically more compact in size, while B-mount batteries, with their higher voltage output and power supply capability, are slightly heavier in comparison. However, they are also more durable and stable.
What devices are compatible with B-mount batteries?
With its higher voltage, B-mount batteries enable more efficient power transmission. Industry-leading cameras such as ALEXA LF, ALEXA, AMIRA, and ALEXA Mini from ARRI demand stable power supply and high output capability due to their high-quality, high-resolution shooting requirements. B-mount batteries meet these demands, ensuring uninterrupted shooting without being affected by power issues.
In addition to ARRI cameras, B-mount batteries are compatible with a range of other high-performance devices, including high-speed cameras like the Phantom Flex4K. These devices also have stringent power requirements and are typically used for special effects, slow-motion, or capturing subtle movements.
With its many advantages such as high voltage, stability, and compatibility, B-mount batteries have become highly acclaimed in the field of cinematography. Whether for film production or various projects like advertising, they demonstrate outstanding performance and exceptional reliability.
